UN World Issues

I thought that all the presentations were really original and that the way how different groups presented different topics were really interesting. However, I would have to say that what Stephan said about the Blood Diamond in Africa was especially shocking because I had thought that the Blood Diamond was lessening. What Joshua’s group said about the child soldiers was sad because there are so many children forced to raid their own villages and kill their own families. Finally, Michael’s group’s iMovie was one of the best. Though the information was not that full, the way they presented it was effective and the music suited the topic- Climate Change.

If I could change one thing about my presentation I would change the way I presented. I thought though my group knew the information, we didn’t really try our best. Note Cards would also have helped. However, the major change I would do is to pick a different topic. Globalization is kind of a dull subject for 6th graders and doesn’t have much information besides the impact globalization has on the stock market. I would have organized the slideshow better and included some music. All in all, I thought that this was a great project and I would like to do this againl.

Famous Egyptian Reflection

April 24, 2007

I thought that I did fairy well though I could have annunciated my words better. I learned a lot of new things from the speeches today especially how the great pyramid originated and more about the gods. I would change my speech because it is very long and I would have practiced a bit more. Overall, it was a great experience!

Famous Egyptians Speech

April 24, 2007

Greetings and Salutations, subjects of Egypt. I, Nefertiti the Beautiful, (in fact, my name means “The Beautiful One has Arrived”) and renowned throughout the world for my beauty. You may grovel if you wish. My cunning wits and my very existence have changed Egypt for the greater good.

I have several titles praising my beauty. And if you don’t know by now that I am Nefertiti- I will send you to be eaten by the crocodiles. Though no one knows where I was born, many ignorant fools think that I am a daughter of an army general who later became Pharaoh. Others think that I am a princess of distant China. Or even a lowly peasant! Similar to my origin, the date of my birth has long been shrouded in mystery and I intend for it to remain that way. So there.

Even though I had to go through the trials of having six daughters (two of which married Pharaohs) I still have maintained my beauty. And my weight… In fact, I am so beautiful that artisans throughout Egypt have reproduced my image. Another reason why I have changed Egypt with my amazing beauty is how I helped Amenhotep (my husband) with his new religion. By the way, we started the first religion that worshipped one god. That’s called monotheism as if you peasants did know that. Our god is Aten, the sun disk. And poo to the other gods. So as you see, without me, Egypt would not be the mighty empire that it is.

I am soooo very smart that without me…you peasants would still be worshipping the old gods. And lacking a very beautiful high priestess. And who helped Amenhotep advertise his new religion? Who exposed all you lowly peasants to the glory that is Aten? That’s right. ME! As for you petty nobles-whose statue decorates your hall? Whose pyramid in building gives travelers a landmark? Me! But the pyramid isn’t really mine…I mean, it is Amenhotep’s and he is going to have me painted in place of the god on his sarcophagus but still- I have been a great influence in the religion of Egypt during the Armana period.

As you all can see I Nefertiti, have had an enormous impact on Egypt. But did you know that after my darling husband Amenhotep passed on to Aten I ruled? Yes. I ruled under the name of Smenkhara. And after all my hard work, my arrogant husband IGNORED me after his twelfth year of Pharaoh. So I went into seclusion and returned as Smenkhara. I told you that already? Oh…sorry…Anyway. Now that you all have been enlightened, kindly go away and leave me alone! Go and build me a pyramid or something.

Response for Maya’s Current Event

 What new information has emerged?

Not a lot but some citizens of India and Pakistan are concerned about the lack of security in between the two countries for transport. Some of the relatives of the casualties do not plan on using that route of transportation in the near future.

What did you find interesting about this topic?

I found that how humankind can wage wars and commit violence amazing. It’s strange that there is all the sadness and hostility all around of the world when there is already enough going on.

What did you like about the initial blog posting? I liked how Maya described the situation. She was organised and well prepared for the questions. I also liked how she used the formatting to the best of its advantage.

Current Event- January hottest month on record

February 21, 2007

What is the issue?

Experts say that the previous January was the hottest month on record, beating 2002’s record by 0.81 degrees Celsius. Even water and land temperatures have changed drastically, soaring up to 1.53 degrees Fahrenheit warmer than normal. While these figures may not seem to affect the world, scientists disagree. They say that records are broken at the most, hundreglobal-warming-mountain.jpgdths of a degree at a time. Meteorologists think that this sudden rise in temperature is not only due to the heating of the Pacific Ocean(a small factor) but global warming and climate changes.

Who is involved?

As of now, only meteorologists are involved but as Earth’s temperature rises, everyone will be involved.

Who is affected and how?

Right now, no one is affected but if global warming continues, many people, the whole world even will be affected. For example, if there is global warming, glaciers and ice caps will melt, and are melting. This will lead to floods in northern Europe and the northern part of North America.

What would you do if you were directly involved

If I was directly involved, I would try to raise awareness because some people don’t know about global warming. Another way would be to replace fossil fuels with the fuel that runs on vegetables in order to stop the lessening of the ozone layer. I would also replace trucks on an yearly basis to stop the emission from getting into the atmosphere. However, in the long run, global warming is unpreventable.

Reflection number 2

February 12, 2007

  • What would you change about the final product (the wiki you created) if you were to do the assignment again?
  • I would change the order in which we did the wiki. First, I would look for the images and get them over with before going on to the info because the images took up the most time for me. I would also change the layout of the wiki.

Look at some of the other wikis from any class and find a few that you think are done exceptionally well. Tell me the name of the empire and the block, and then explain what you like about their wikispace.

    Swahili Trading States- Block D

This group did very well on organization and the information was accurate as well as easy to read.

     Ancient Ghana- Block D

I think that this group did very well because all the information was well thought out. Their pictures were very good and I liked the way they included additional information.

    Response to Haruka’s Current Event

    December 14, 2006

    link to event:http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/15959573/

How are your two events connected?
My event and the initial posting are connected because they are both natural disasters that occurred in the Philipenes.

What did you find interesting about this topic?
I found how the Filipino people coped with so many disasters in the course of a few weeks interesting. Also, I admire their courage to be able to get over many relative’s or friend’s deaths

What did you like about the initial blog posting?
I enjoyed Haruka’s presentation because it was clear and we were able to read it. Her event was relevant and informative
